Juliana Bernal´s work proposes a series of relationships based on the vital experience to be a mother. Through the exercise of folding and weaving paper into modulations, volumes and geometric, it gives us the affective language of care between mother and son. These forms show the viewer the experience of bonding and recollection, awakening a kinetic effect that suggests cyclical or spiral movements. The cycle is a concept about the Juliana’s work as a symbol of the circle of life and its incessant gravitation on individuals. Her compositions are defined by the rhythm sequences and color gradations. This visual language is the result of her emotional development and the conscious exploration of her place as a mother.

Juliana’s Work Bernal propone una serie de relaciones visuales y espaciales a partir de la experiencia vital de la maternidad. A través del ejercicio del doblez y el tramado de papel en modulaciones, volúmenes y juegos geométricos, la artista traduce el lenguaje afectivo del cuidado, la espera y la unión entre la madre y el hijo. Las formas derivadas evocan en el espectador la experiencia propia del vínculo y el recogimiento, y despiertan un effecto cinético que sugiere movimientos cíclicos o en espiral. El concepto de ciclo, precisamente, recorre el trabajo de la artista como símbolo del transcurso de la vida y de su gravitación incesante sobre los individuos. Las composiciones de Bernal se definen en el ritmo, las secuencias y las gradaciones cromáticas. Este lenguaje visual es el resultado de la transposición de su devenir emocional y de la exploración consciente de su lugar enunciativo como madre.

Color is also a primary vector in Bernal’s work, as the way it is arranged and combined in each piece responds to a psychological purpose that immerses the viewer in the moods that inspired the work. The artist has carefully defined a palette whose properties induce an immersive experience. Thus, her work is crossed by primary tones that allude to the origin and strength of life: yellows and golds that suggest light, value, and beauty; blues, representing harmony and fidelity; and reds, evoking vitality and joy. These nuances are complemented by earthy tones that speak of roots, coziness, and the natural; and whites, symbolizing the spiritual, new beginnings, and renewal.

She questions motherhood as an inseparable and dominant bond between mother and child from the moment of conception, revealing in her artistic exploration each of the experiential stages that define this process. The visual form, through color, material, and composition, merges with the conceptual root of the work, in that the folded and woven paper—at once docile and firm through gesture—invokes the experience of dedication and roots. The narrative thread of motherhood ultimately challenges us as subjects in search of our own connection with our origins and most primary spaces; with our own affective tissues stimulated by the reflection of those patterns, rhythms, and paper paths.
